A M King’s two expansion projects for ALDI Inc.’s corporate headquarters in Batavia, IL won three collective awards: a Merit Award / American Institute of Architects; an EIC Eagle Award / Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC); and Best Project / Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA).
The first expansion of this facility enabled ALDI to support the rapid increase in the number of its employees. A M King installed an industrial test kitchen that includes walk-in freezers and coolers and a HVAC system designed for efficiently heating and cooling tube coils and VAV boxes. Much of the interior architecture was designed to integrate extensive use of granite and solid wood panels and railings in the lobbies and stairwells. The exterior skin is an architectural pre-cast with both a heavy and light sandblast finish with curtain wall glazing. The second expansion is connected to the existing five-story corporate office and consists of conference rooms, training facilities, supplier meeting rooms. We also incorporated an aluminum window system and a new concrete parking lot. The expansion was completed without interruption to ALDI operations.
