Construction Is Complete On Award-winning, Ambulatory Pediatric Dental Surgery Center In Charlotte

Charlotte, NC—A M King and The Keith Corporation (TKC) announced today that construction is complete for a single specialty, dental-only ambulatory surgery center in the University area of Charlotte. The new facility is 11,000 square feet and is located directly behind Novant University Medical Plaza at the intersection of Medical Plaza Drive and W.T. Harris Boulevard.

Carolinas Center for Ambulatory Dentistry (CCAD), dba Valleygate Dental Surgery Center of Charlotte, is leasing the entire building under a long-term lease with an option to purchase. TKC secured all entitlements, financed and leased the project. TKC will also be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the facility.

The project was a finalist in the Healthcare Real Estate Insights Awards for 2018, the only national awards program for healthcare real estate.  It also won a North Carolina Humanitarian Award as it addressed a significant shortfall in pediatric dental/medical care in North Carolina.

“We are excited that Carolinas Center for Ambulatory Dentistry selected The Keith Corporation to develop its new state-of-the-art dental surgery center at this excellent location in the University area of Charlotte,” says TKC Healthcare Development Partner, Andrew Lawler. “We are expecting the facility to be quite successful for them.”

A M King designed and constructed the shell building and facilitated interior construction of two operating rooms, two procedure rooms, four private exam/pre-op/post-op rooms, six semi-private recovery areas, a nurse station, waiting area, restrooms and locker rooms. The site features a patio area, bike paths and fully connected sidewalks throughout the parking lot that connect to the sidewalks along Medical Plaza Drive and Mallard Creek Road. The goal is to promote pedestrian traffic while still meeting area zoning requirements.

The state-certified dental-only ambulatory surgery center project includes medical gas installation, as well as medical vacuum, dental vacuum and intricate mechanical controls. The facility houses a generator–per state mandate for life support–separate patient and ambulatory entrances and LED lighting throughout. In addition, because this facility serves pediatric patients, tamper-proof switches and access controls have been put in place.

“It’s great to complete another successful project with The Keith Corporation,” says Dan Crist, A M King Vice President. “This facility is a complex fusion of pediatric dental surgery and operating facilities, and we are very proud of the result.”

CCAD, DBA Valleygate Dental Surgery Center of Charlotte was formed by partners at Carolinas Center for Oral & Facial Surgery (CCOFS) and Village Family Dental. CCOFS is an oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty practice, utilizing cutting edge dental and oral surgery technology, while providing a full range of services including: wisdom teeth removal, facial aesthetics, dental implants, jaw surgery, TMJ treatment and cleft lip surgery. Village Family Dental is one of the largest pediatric dental providers in North Carolina, a multifaceted Fayetteville-based dental practice that covers all areas of dentistry.

In addition, Village Family Dental designed and obtained the demonstration project for the issuance of the Certificates of Need in North Carolina. Valleygate Dental Surgery Center of Fayetteville, the first dental-only ambulatory surgery center in NC, opened in March 2018 and has received the ABC Pinnacle Award for Design, as well as been recognized by Methodist University for its unique contribution to solving access to care issues for the underserved.

CCAD procured one of only four Certificates of Need, statewide, for this type of facility from the State of North Carolina. The center will improve access to dental surgery for children and reduce wait time for needed procedures by offering open credentialing to local pediatric dentists and oral surgeons. The facility will help area families by performing 20+ dental surgeries per day, versus 3-5 typically performed in a hospital setting.
