A M King Renovates Former Paper Mill For Revolutionary Die Cut Co.

Charlotte, NC—A M King, a fully integrated design-build firm, has announced its debut project for Mueller. The upfit and relocation of the company’s existing manufacturing, warehouse and office space in Charlotte will consolidate business to a single location, eliminating the need to rent a third party warehouse and allowing for continued growth. The project is anticipated to be completed in September.

Mueller was founded in Manhattan in 1940, moved its entire operation to Charlotte in 2003 and continues to quietly expand products and service capabilities. The company provides die cutting, CNC cutting, engineering, laminating and precision slitting for an interesting array of applications. Those include using foam, rubber, silicone, films, foils and adhesives for acoustical insulation, LED reflectors, thermal management and window sealing. The end result may be gaskets for electrical metering equipment or vibration dampening products for noisy equipment. They also supply specialty solutions for the U.S. military and name Trane Commercial as one of their largest customers.

Their growth has been inhibited, however, by a burgeoning workforce trying to operate in two crowded buildings and paying for trucking services to ferry product back and forth.

To bring their working environment on par with their continued growth and professionalism, Mueller called on A M King to manage the renovation of a previously unoccupied, leased building off Westlake Drive. The plan is to consolidate their office, manufacturing and warehouse space under one roof and elevate their customer experience, employee satisfaction and organization and distribution of premium products.

The 135,000-square-foot building was previously used as a paper mill. A M King began to dismantle the existing structure by working with the owner to help plan the use of space and determine how to astutely marry existing capacity with new construction. Our expertise will also come into play as we work to observe the temperature-specific requirements in the warehouse area. In addition, we collaborated with all of Mueller’s vendors to install low-voltage cabling, a security system, fire alarms and multi-functional, specialty furniture.

“We are pulling in third parties and getting everyone to work together to complete this project on very tight schedule,” says A M King Project Manager Carl Morse. “Our team’s skill will produce the antithesis of what was originally standing here.”

A M King will utilize a ribbon window system, spanning the entire length of the front of the building that will provide an abundance of natural light. Renovations will be made to the office area, as well as installation of new carpet, tile, paint and millwork. Finally, HVAC systems for warehouse areas and power for the manufacturing equipment will be provided.
